“Not all kids get to grow up in a nice environment. Many have gotten the message that they have no value. If all we do is provide a place where, for a moment, they are recognized as valuable human being, we can change a life.”
Of the young people sheltered in 2010:
- 89% had been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused
- 80% were living with parents who were abusing alcohol and/or drugs
- 72% had seen their parents beating each other and/or their siblings
- 69% had been abandoned by their parents
As the number of clients escalates, so does the number of client issues.
New Morning has taken the first step in protecting the futures of our community’s children: beginning the construction of the new shelter. The new facility is triple the size and double the bed space of our previous shelter, allowing us to serve more than 400 youths each year. Additionally, the facility allows us to expand our counseling center, doubling the number of rooms so we can provide counseling and therapy to more children and families than ever before.
But the need is far from met.
In order to serve the expanded needs of our clients, we must ensure the new facility is fully equipped and that the essential services to meet our clients’ needs are in place. These include:
- 24/7 crisis intervention services
- Individual, group and family counseling for child and teen victims of abuse
- Parent- child counseling for children 2 -7 years old
- Parent education classes and support groups
- 24/7 shelter to ensure that all youth in our community have immediate access to a safe and supportive environment. This will require that we build a larger 12 bed shelter.
Please contribute to our new children’s shelter. We need contributions, large and small, from community members who want to support the community’s youth at the most critical point in their development. Help the most needy of children surmount the overwhelming obstacles blocking their futures.
The current shelter was built with private donations and opened in 1992, housing six beds for both boys and girls between the ages of 6-17 years. However, the growing need has rendered this shelter inadequate. With just over 1,000 sq. ft and six beds, our shelter is inadequate to meet today’s demands for serving homeless youth and the periodic demand in excess of our current bed space results in turning youth away. In addition, the issues facing our sheltered clients have continued to grow more severe and the space available is often inadequate to cope with the many emotional struggles the youth face.
Our new shelter is also near a variety of other services important to the case management of sheltered youth (Child Protective Services, Boys and Girls Club, County Mental Health and Public Health, other recreational opportunities, and all major community bus lines). The structure will be approximately 3,500 square feet and consist of: 6 bedrooms, 12 beds, a kitchen, a living/dining room, a recreation center, a media room (for study and recreation), a quiet room, and a supply room.
The new shelter, designed by Anova Architects of Placerville, includes:
- Improved study areas
- Private counseling spaces
- Modern kitchen and common areas
- Greater seismic safety
- Handicap accessibility
- Sustainable materials and energy-efficient elements
New Morning includes youth in decision-making in regard to shelter operations through daily meetings with shelter staff and other residents, includes youth in the design of their own case management and clinical treatment plans, teaches youth skills for healthy, independent living during their shelter stay; introduces youth to the community agencies and individuals available to help them meet their personal goals; assists youth in identifying and joining peer groups where they can have fun, express themselves, and learn new skills, and promotes volunteer opportunities for youth to serve their community.
